We currently host Postgres databases here in Oz on our own servers, I have no experience hosting an Omnis server but if the Linux version runs well enough getting a linux based VM on Amazon and running an Omnis server on that should be pretty straight forward.
Another thing which would really be cool is if this could be packaged with something like bitnami or docker. We’re doing a lot with docker now on our synology NAS servers and I am really impressed by what you can do here as a deployment mechanism. We’re not there yet but we’re thinking about creating a docker solution that combines our database server, our documents server and our middletier solution as a package and simply deploy that at our clients.
Mark, I think if someone would start up a business where you could easily spin up an instance combining a database server like Postgres, the Omnis server and Apache/Nginx that both have a landing page for the end user and a maintenance page that allows you to upload new libraries and restart the thing, you’d probably make some money. Though personally I think it would be in Tigerlogics interest to either look at bitnami or look at amazon web servers and see if they can create a template that any Omnis developer can use to just use those services to accomplish this.
