Re: OT: laptop for development
We all use the 15” MacBook Pro with retina. Reasons are simply versatility. Mixture of the USB-C versions and the prior version.
the 2TB SSD drive is great for having a number of postgres databases from customers running for test environments
Virtualbox is free from oracle — and we have a number of windows virtual machines on it. I did manage to get OSX 10.6.8 server converted over from parallels VM, so I can run really old omnis versions for a bit. Mostly if I want really old (i.e. omnis classic version 3.7 to convert really old clients), – I start up by windows XP virtual machine or my windows 2000 virtual machines.
you’ll want a big monitor. We’ve used the LG 5K, apple 30” and another hi-res LG monitor. I personally run mine with two additional monitors as part of my studio development environment — lets me see web pages, studio code, background processes, etc all at a glance.
so the big wins are:
– multiple monitors
– fast ssd’s in the latest (they are fast)
– 16 gigs ram
– virtual machines and ability to go way back with omnis if need be.
the one thing I have on mine that I’ve not really found useful yet is the ribbon bar. that may be because its not in may apps yet ..
and the other thing thats taken a bit of getting used to on the latest mac laptops is the keys on the keyboard is a little closer together. After 3 months, I’m still getting used to it. far better than before —but just saying that if you have an earlier macbook pro… the new keyboard does play with the muscle memory on the fingers and will take getting used to.
hope that helps.
