I use an external provided by Doug E and the Artsman gang that is a wrapper for LibXL, a C++ library that can read and write Excel files. Doug was distributing his external for free and maybe still is. I purchased a license for LibXL, $200 for unlimited use.
There may be better approaches now, but this has worked well for me for the past 4 years.
